What is Osteopathy

Osteopathy is an extremely effective, and gentle form of therapy that relieves pain by improving the function of the body as a whole.

Osteopathic treatment involves the gentle manipulation of the body to bring relief and an improved quality of life for patients. Osteopaths recognise that many of the problems of the body may stem from structural or mechanical factors which can inhibit healthy functioning or worsen underlying conditions.

Osteopathy treats the person, rather than the condition and so can benefit adults, children, babies and expectant mothers.

Qualified osteopaths are recognised as primary health care professionals who are registered with the Osteopathic Council of New Zealand and are Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) treatment providers (no GP referral required, we can register claims).on the philosophy of treating the whole person. Osteopathy is complementary to allopathic medicine and has a history of over 130 years.

Your medical history

Before we start to treat you, we will make a full medical assessment. We take time to listen to you and ask questions to make sure we understand your medical history and your day-to-day routine. We’ll ask you about things like diet, exercise and what is happening in your life, as these may assist us in coming to a diagnosis.

Examination

We usually examine your posture and how your body moves. We may also assess what happens when we move it for you and see what hurts, where and when. We may need to conduct examinations such as taking your blood pressure or checking your reflexes or refer you for clinical tests, such as as xrays before we can come to a full diagnosis. We may sometimes feel that osteopathy is not appropriate for you and refer you to your GP or another relevant specialist.

Your treatment

Osteopaths use a wide range of gentle manipulations, depending on your age, fitness and diagnosis. The treatment is specific to each of our patients and may include advice on exercises, ergonomics and posture.
